Art and Survival: Writers and Artists Working Through a Pandemic

For those of us devoted to making meaning through art and writing, what challenges and opportunities do we find in the Covid-19 pandemic? The Interdisciplinary Arts and Writing MFA Program at California Institute for Integral Studies (CIIS) will offer three free workshops designed to inspire important new projects, hosted by MFA faculty Carolyn Cooke and Alex Burger with MFA Program Chair Dr. Cindy Shearer and special guest artists.

Session #1: Containment & Possibility (May 13, 1-2 p.m. PT)
Containment and confinement by pandemics or oppression date back to the dawn of humanity. Many of us have lived through containments medical, racial, geographical, and political. What can we learn from communities previously locked in and the possibilities and creativity that arise out of the experience? Guest poets: Dr. Jacqueline Allen Trimble, author of American Happiness, and the forthcoming How to Survive the Apocalypse and Brynn Saito, author of Power Made Us Swoon and The Palace of Contemplating Departure.
